The Earthquake Still Eating Assam's Tea Gardens

A magnitude 8.6 earthquake struck Upper Assam's tea districts in 1950, and the river it destabilized has been taking garden land ever since, at a rate a 2019 academic review still calls "not settled.

The strongest thing that ever happened to an Assam tea garden was not a market, a pest, or a bad season. It was an earthquake, and it has not finished. On 15 August 1950 the ground under Upper Assam moved at magnitude 8.6, and the river it unsettled is still taking garden land in 2026. Seventy-five years on, a geological event is quietly still deciding which gardens survive.

The quake struck on Independence Day and flattened the tea districts

The USGS event record puts it at M 8.6, epicentre near Rima in the Mishmi Hills, in country claimed by both China and Tibet. It remains one of the most devastating earthquakes of the twentieth century in Northeast India.

The count, per USGS: 1,530 dead in Assam, and two thousand homes, temples and mosques destroyed. The historian Guyot-Réchard, writing in Modern Asian Studies in 2015, puts village losses at 1,671. The Times of India of 21 November 1950 reported 12,000 buildings and 2,000 granaries gone. An interim loss figure of Rs 10 crore, 100 million rupees, was in the paper by 26 August, eleven days after the event.

This office deals in weight and measure, so here is the measured part. The tea districts were not incidental to that damage. They were in it.

Gardens took direct, itemised damage

The 2019 historical review of the earthquake by Ajanta Sharma and Farha Zaman, in the Senhri Journal of Multidisciplinary Studies, is plain about it: most tea gardens in Upper Assam, mainly around Dibrugarh, were more or less affected. Quarters and factories were affected considerably. The gardens themselves witnessed extensive damage, with Jokai, Hansara and several gardens in North Lakhimpur named.

On the east bank of the Subansiri, the Bardeobam garden lost nearly half of its planted area. The botanist F. Kingdon-Ward, writing in 1955, counted it exactly: 342 acres planted, 126 of them damaged.

At Lilabari garden in Lakhimpur district, the godown went. That is the building where the leaf is stored. A garden with no godown at harvest cannot process what it picks that season.

The way out went too. Roads buckled at Khowang, Doomdooma, Danhori and Dhola. The railway line and bridge from Dibrugarh to Saikhowaghat were damaged, the tracks deformed. Note that combination. Ruined leaf stores, damaged factories, and no road or rail to move what survived.

The shaking passed in minutes. The water took decades, and it is not done.

Landslides in the hills dammed the Brahmaputra's tributaries, the Dihing, the Dibang, the Tiding, and the Subansiri's own feeders the Dirgha, Kadam and Kakoi, with what the review describes as millions of tonnes of sediment. Those dams did not hold. When they failed, walls of water and sediment came down onto the plains where the gardens are.

The Mishing eyewitnesses interviewed for the 2019 field survey were in their late nineties by then, and they were specific. Before the earthquake, the Brahmaputra near Dibrugarh ran about 600 to 700 metres wide (roughly 2,000 to 2,300 feet), with a few hundred metres of deep channel. Afterward it widened to several kilometres in places, more than a mile in some stretches.

A widening river takes whatever sits on the bank. In Upper Assam, a great deal of what sits on the bank is tea.

The Subansiri dam held eight days, then let go

One landslide dam on the Subansiri stood for eight days before it burst. The wave it sent downstream was seven metres high, twenty-three feet, and it drowned several villages. The era's own tallies do not agree on the dead: 532 by one count, 536 by another, both drawn from the same historical record. This office states both rather than pretend a false precision it cannot certify.

Keep that toll separate in your head from the 1,530 dead in Assam. They are different counts from different sources measuring different things, and this office does not add numbers together to make a bigger one.

Sarbananda Mazindar was fourteen at the time and eighty-nine when Outlook India's retrospective found him. His account of the day is short: the ground was shaking, and they heard roaring sounds, and he got very scared. The Brahmaputra started flowing backwards. People saw huge timber logs floating in the river that had fallen in Arunachal.

Erosion did not stop when the shaking did

Not solved, not stabilised, not historic. Not settled, present tense, in a paper written sixty-nine years after the event.

Sadiya township was cut off entirely when the earthquake changed the course of the Digaru.

The review's own conclusion is one flat sentence: the rate of erosion is higher aftermath the great Assam earthquake of 1950. Higher, and still running. Outlook India's retrospective totals it up. Since 1950, the Brahmaputra and its tributaries have eroded more than 4.27 lakh hectares (427,000 hectares) of land, about 7.40 percent of Assam's entire land area.

That is the certified position. A single day in 1950 destabilised the banks of the largest river in the region, and the bill has been arriving annually ever since, in hectares.

What this office will and will not certify about Dighaltarang

Be careful here, because the honest version is the useful one.

This office has already reported on Dighaltarang Tea Estate in Tinsukia district, in the Doomdooma revenue circle, where the Brahmaputra has taken 35.48 hectares and is now closing on the estate's factory, hospital and workers' quarters. The garden supports 1,474 families.

Doomdooma is one of the places whose roads buckled in 1950. That is a fact, and it is where the fact stops. No source in front of this office traces Dighaltarang's present erosion to the 1950 earthquake specifically, and this office will not certify a causal chain it cannot weigh. What the academic record does establish is the general pattern: the quake destabilised the Brahmaputra's banks across Upper Assam, the erosion rate rose after it, and the problem is documented as unsettled decades later.

Dighaltarang is what that general, still-running pattern looks like when it reaches one particular factory wall. It is an illustration, not a proof.

A garden's oldest liability is the riverbank it sits on

Tea in Assam is planted where it is because the alluvial ground is good and the water is close. Both of those facts come from the same river, and the river has been unstable since a Tuesday evening in 1950.

So when a garden goes under, the ledger usually reads flood, or erosion, or bad luck. The longer entry is that a fault near Rima moved, the hills came down into the tributaries, the tributaries came down onto the plain, and the Brahmaputra has been widening into tea land ever since at a rate nobody has managed to bring back down.

Whatever is brewing in your pot right now is brisk, malty and entirely unbothered by any of this. The ground it grew on is a different matter, and it is still moving.
