The Shade Trees Assam Kept on a Feeling

Planters clearing forest for the first Assam gardens left the Albizia standing because they suspected tea wanted a canopy. It became doctrine before anyone could explain it, spread from Assam to half the tropics, and was not priced until a 1965 field trial put a number on what the shade costs.

The trees standing over an Assam tea garden were left there on a hunch. When planters cleared forest to open the first gardens in the Brahmaputra valley, they did not clear all of it. They kept some of the Albizia already growing on the ground, on no stronger reasoning than that tea in the wild had grown under a canopy and might want one in cultivation. Nothing was tested. Within a few decades the practice was fixed doctrine across Northeast India and had been carried to Ceylon, Indonesia and Africa. The agronomy that explains why the hunch held up arrived long after the canopy was in place, and the first hard measurement of what it costs was not published until 1965.

Camellia sinensis is an understory plant. It grows wild beneath a forest canopy, and that single fact was the whole of the early argument: a plant that had grown in shade was assumed to want shade.

The tea-education resource maintained by Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University, a public university in Assam, is candid about how thin the reasoning was. In its account of the new clearings, some Albizia trees were retained1 "with a feeling that a canopy of forest trees might be beneficial for the growth of tea bushes." A feeling. Not a trial, not a yield table, not a control plot.

The first species kept was Albizzia chinensis, the Sau tree, and it is the original shade tree of the Assam gardens. It is a legume, which is why planters were calling it a tea fertilizing tree well before anyone could state what the fertilizing consisted of. Albizzia odoratissima, Dalbergia assamica and Erythrina indica followed. Legumes, all of them.

The feeling hardened into doctrine, then got exported

By the early twentieth century the argument was settled without ever having been held. The same resource records that most planters had accepted shade1 as a regular feature of tea estates in Northeast India, and that a tradition of growing shade trees for successful tea culture was built up around it. That is doctrine by consensus, not by measurement.

Then it travelled. The Assam approach to shade went on to influence practice in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), Indonesia, South India and Africa, with local implementation varying from place to place. A guess made in one river valley became the default posture of tea planting across most of the world's growing regions.

The first real explanation was in the fallen leaves. Albizia odoratissima, one of the legumes the Assam gardens adopted early, drops about 655 kilograms of leaf litter per hectare by dry weight, and that litter delivers roughly 16 kilograms of nitrogen3 back into the same hectare of soil. About 1,450 pounds of dead leaf, about 35 pounds of nitrogen, on ground that grows a crop with a serious nitrogen appetite. The planters who kept the trees were feeding their bushes and did not know the figure.

The species took over the region on that strength. About 75 percent of all tea shade trees in Bangladesh, in the same Northeast growing belt, are this one species.

There was a second payment nobody planted for. A mature Albizia odoratissima reaches 22 to 26 metres tall (roughly 70 to 85 feet) and 120 to 150 centimetres in diameter (four to five feet across). It gets there slowly. A five-year-old on a good site stands about 5 metres (16 feet) at 14 centimetres (about 5.5 inches) in diameter, a little over a centimetre of trunk a year. Its heartwood runs 20 to 40 percent stronger than teak, at a density of 735 kilograms per cubic metre at 12 percent moisture (about 46 pounds per cubic foot). The gardens kept these trees to shade a bush and grew a hardwood timber stand over the crop by accident.

Shade is not a general law of tea, and Assam is the reason it looks like one. Air temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius (about 86 Fahrenheit) are harmful to the tea plant, and Assam's harvest season runs past that threshold routinely. That alone would make shade useful.

The valley makes it necessary. Hills stand on either side of the Brahmaputra and shelter the plain between them, so wind velocity across the gardens is unusually low, and moving air is what would otherwise carry heat off a leaf. The KKHSOU account is blunt on the consequence: shade trees are needed there specifically to hold leaf temperature down, a job that cannot be achieved by artificial shading. Cloth and netting do not substitute for a canopy in still air.

Darjeeling is cool enough that shade is not required there at all. Same country, same crop, opposite rule. What spread out of Assam began as a local answer to a local climate.

The rest of the ledger is short and it holds up: nitrogen from the legumes, moisture kept in the soil, fewer mites, a microclimate the bush actually grows well in. None of it was measured when the trees went in. All of it was true anyway.

A 2021 study of the tea plant's own biochemistry, working with a different cultivar under controlled growth-chamber light, tested a range of intensities and found no simple "more sun, more strength" rule. Catechin production peaked at a moderate light level5, the compound class behind astringency and the sensation you weigh as strength, and fell away at both extremes: too little light suppressed it, and so, separately, did too much. That study was not run on an Assam bush under an Assam canopy, and this office will not borrow its exact numbers for a different plant in a different climate. What it establishes is the shape of the mechanism: light reaching the leaf is a lever on the chemistry of the leaf, calibrated rather than simply on or off, and a canopy is what sets how much light that is.

The planters who left the Albizia standing were, without any way of knowing it, setting a variable in the finished tea. The soil under the same bushes runs its own account, graded separately in the file on Assam's soil and monsoon. What the trees add is the light budget above.

Shade is not free, and the cleanest number on the cost is not an Assam number. In 1965, McCulloch, Pereira, Kerfoot and Goodchild published a field trial in Agricultural Meteorology4 testing the Assam variety of tea, var. assamica, grown under East African conditions, not in Assam. Their shade species was Grevillea robusta, which is not a legume and returns no nitrogen the way an Albizia does.

The finding: planting Grevillea throughout the tea reduced yield overall by 10 to 15 percent. One test in the trial also found tea quality adversely affected.

The method was plain enough to trust: bushes counted under shade in bright sun, leaf plucked at set distances from the trees, checked across two climates, one wetter than the other. Nothing exotic. A measurement, taken once nobody thought to take it before.

Take the number for what it is: one non-leguminous species, in another continent's conditions, on the Assam plant. It is not a verdict on Albizia over the Brahmaputra valley. It is the honest shape of the trade-off, and the wider agronomy agrees on the direction. Prolonged or excessive shading reduces tea biomass, leaves new shoots soft and moisture-laden, and lowers dry matter content, all of which come out of yield.

The argument now is how much, not whether

Every mature Assam garden is running a calibration. Too little canopy and the leaf runs hot in still air, past the 30 degree threshold that harms the plant. Too much and the bush makes soft, watery shoots and the estate gives up crop it cannot sell. The trees are a setting, not a heritage feature, and the industry has been adjusting that setting for well over a century without getting to stop.

By weight and measure, the record certifies this much. The nineteenth-century planter who left the Albizia standing could not defend his reasoning, and the reasoning was sound anyway. The nitrogen was real, the leaf temperature was real, and the light budget reaches the strength in your cup. The yield he gave up for it was also real, and nobody sent him the invoice for another hundred years.
